MMC Materials began as “Mississippi Concrete and Material Company” – formed in Jackson MS in 1927 by the company now known as “Dunn Investment Company” located in Birmingham AL. Dunn began operations in 1878 in Virginia in the railroad construction industry.
Mississippi Concrete and Material Company was first located on Green Street in Jackson, the current site of our Jackson MS shop. One concrete plant was located on the same site as an asphalt plant operated by Dunn.
In 1932 the company changed its name to “Mississippi Materials Company”. Ellis Hoffpauir was President at that time. In 1959, under Vice President Sam Gholson, the company moved to Fortification Street, present site of our Central MS Area office, and replaced its concrete plant with a much larger one.
In 1961, operations were expanded into Brandon MS. Between 1975 and 1981, the company extended into Forest MS, Meridian MS, and several locations in north MS under the leadership of Mike Mockbee, General Manager.
From 1983 through 1996 the company experienced dramatic growth. We expanded into Louisiana, Tennessee and started a Mobile operations group. Operations were added in Mississippi including Greenville, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, Columbus, Kosciusko, and Vicksburg. Additional operations in Gulfport were added and run as Gulf Concrete. Elton Cook, Gary Ferebee, and James French provided important leadership during this period.
In 1999, Mississippi Materials Company changed its name to “MMC Materials, Inc.” and added operations in the Batesville, MS area. In 2002 MMC’s subsidiary Gulf Concrete, expanded into the Mobile, AL and Pascagoula, MS areas and changed its name to Gulf Concrete, LLC. Danny Rodgers, President and COO of MMC and Gulf, provided direction during this significant time. Gulf, became no longer a subsidiary of MMC but a sister company operating along the MS and AL gulf coast.
In 2003 through 2006, certain Louisiana & Tennessee operations were divested and plants in the operating region now known as the Golden Triangle Area were added (including Starkville, Columbus and West Point).
In 2006 Rodney Grogan, President of sister company Dunn Road Builders, became President of MMC. Mike Pepper Engineering VP of MMC, became President of Gulf Concrete. Danny Rodgers, former President of MMC and Gulf became President and CEO of Dunn Investment Company. The words “Honesty, Excellence, and Continuous Improvement” were added to logos of both MMC and Gulf. Gulf changed its name to Bayou Concrete, LLC effective Jan 1, 2008.
